There are so many types of scissors, the mind boggles, but when it comes to sewing, you definitely want the right pair of scissors for the job.

When you are starting out, you will need at least one pair of extra sharp scissors that are used for fabric only. It's a good idea to invest in a really good sharp pair; I bought a cheap pair when I first started sewing curtains and cushions years ago and they needed replacing within a year of starting to sew clothes. I recently bought an extremely sharp pair from Fiskars and so far, I am really happy with them. They come with a cover which protects the blades and prevents accidental cuts. They are so sharp, that I've cut myself a few times. They cut through fabric really well and are much easier on my forearms when cutting out. You can buy a pair at Minerva Crafts here.

As I started sewing more, due to the fact it was lock-down and I was on furlough, I really wanted a small pair of scissors for trimming threads at the end of a seam. My big pair, I only had one pair at the time, were rather heavy and I kept bumping my sewing machine with the long blades. I got my first pair of embroidery scissors, also a fairly cheap pair, they were just so cute, I couldn't resist - I had to have them. They are so useful, I don't know how I managed without them.

I have not bought a pair of Pinking Scissors yet, as I haven't had reason to use them. I like to finish my seams in cotton fabrics by folding the fabric under and towards the seam and sewing close to the edge of the fold. Once it's pressed it looks really neat when the garment is inside out. The other way I like to finish the inside is with my serger - partly to achieve a 'store-bought look'. It works really well if the thread matches the fabric. If you do buy Pinking scissors, get a strong sharp pair.

I have a pair of sewing snips, but I haven't really used them much. I think I will give them another try and let you know what I think.

While I can tell you what works for me, I think people need to try different things and work out what works for them. I did get by with a very basic sewing kit for about a year of starting sewing clothes, I wasn't sure if I would even sew well enough to wear anything I made. Don't go out and buy a huge sewing kit straight away - it can be really expensive.
